USTA Junior Team Tennis (JTT) @ PALY

Competitive training + Supervised team match play

What is JTT (Junior Team Tennis)?

JTT offers organized and coach-supervised team match play for juniors during the Fall, Spring and Summer seasons. Players form teams of 3 or more and compete against other local teams. Click here to learn more about JTT in NorCal.

Through supervised match play, students will gain valuable match experience, competition management techniques and team camaraderie that propel them to higher levels of junior tennis.

Anyone under age 18 with yellow ball match play experience can form a team or join an existing one. To join JTT @ PALY, you don’t have to be a Palo Alto High School student. We welcome students from Gunn, local private schools and even other cities as long as they can make it to training and matches at the Paly tennis courts.

If you don’t already have a team, sign up anyway and we will help to group you with others to form balanced teams for our league.

For Summer 2025, we will have a local league, which means all practices and matches are at Paly courts, with youths joining from nearby areas. Travel league JTT will start Fall 2025 and teams based at Paly will compete against teams across the South Bay and Peninsula.

More detailed program information

What are the JTT groups available this summer?

In the summer 2025, we will aim to have two age groups - 14U and 18U – supervised by Coach Andy Chang (Head Coach at Paly), Coach JP Fruttero (Former #1 player at Cal-Berkeley and Top 100 ATP Pro, Co-Founder of Fruttero Tennis Academy) and other high-level coaches from The Fruttero Tennis Academy.

• The 14U group will be gender neutral and consist mostly of middle school students. More experienced 14U players, if qualified, can join the 18U group after coach’s assessment.

• The 18U group will consist mostly of high school students and be separated by gender if at least 12 players from each gender register. If not, then we will have co-ed teams with players matched to players of the same gender from the opposing teams.

Match Play Format and Scoring

The exact scoring format will be determined shortly after we confirm the total number of registrants. The league’s minimum requirement is four teams of 3 players for the 5-week summer season.

Typically, teams will play at least 2 rounds of 1-set matches, giving each player the chance to play singles as well as doubles. Each team will independently decide who plays in each round, depending on player strength and availability. Typically the team that wins the most total number games across all rounds wins the meet.

If you plan to form your own team, make sure you have enough players for each match during the 5-week summer season so you’re not forced to forfeit matches.

All match results will be recorded and reported, so each player’s WTN rating will be updated accordingly. WTN and UTR are both accepted competitive tennis rating systems.
